Russian airports will get their own names.

Russian airports will be named after famous compatriots as part of the "Great Names of Russia" project, TASS reports.

Russia has launched a nationwide competition, "Great Names of Russia." Russians are being asked to choose the names of outstanding personalities. which will supplement the official names of 45 Russian airports of international and federal significance.

Anyone can already submit their own proposals for new names on the project's website. Candidates can include the names of outstanding compatriots who have made significant contributions to the development and evolution of Russia, including those who have received international recognition in literature, music, fine arts, science, and culture, or who participated in scientific and geographical discoveries, military victories, social transformations, and so on. The most important thing to note is that the individual must have a direct connection to a specific city or region.

The final vote will take place from November 8th to 30th, during which everyone will be able to choose one airport from the general list and vote for one name. The results of the competition will be announced on December 5th.

The project participants include airports in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Anapa, Voronezh, Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk, Murmansk, Magadan, Novosibirsk, Perm, Sochi, Simferopol, Kaliningrad, Surgut, Tyumen, Khabarovsk, and others.

Currently, more than 200 airports worldwide bear the names of prominent people. These include Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome, John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, and Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris. In Russia, these include Gagarin International Airport in Saratov, Platov International Airport in Rostov-on-Don, N.M. Karamzin International Airport in Ulyanovsk, and others.
