Airfare prices in Russia will continue to rise unless carriers receive incentives.

Since the beginning of this year, the cost of economy class flights on Russian airlines has increased by 7.5%—more than in all of 2018. Against this backdrop, the Russian Association of Air Transport Operators (RAETO) sent a letter to Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov, in which called for a number of benefits to be provided to carriers.

According to Kommersant, the increase in transportation tariffs, according to the letter's authors, is primarily due to rising prices for fuel, airport services, and air navigation services.

"The combination of these negative factors led to a sharp (more than tenfold for some airlines) decline in financial performance and losses," the letter states.

It also notes that due to the current situation, airlines have been forced to take "unpopular" measures. For example, some carriers have suspended modernization and upgrades of their fleets and ground facilities. Furthermore, airlines have begun to reduce their passenger service programs and optimize their route networks.
