The popular Thai tourist site of Ayutthaya in the ancient city of the same name, located 70 kilometers north of Bangkok, is experiencing a real invasion of visitors. Tourist traffic to the attraction has increased tenfold in recent months, thanks to the TV series Love Destiny, which has a huge fan base.
This Thai TV show tells the love story of one of the kings of Ayutthaya, Narai, and the series takes place in the 17th century. Fans of the series crowd around the complex of ancient buildings, especially the Wat Chaiwatthanaram temple, and many of them dress in 17th-century fashion to feel like they are participants in historical events.
According to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, local authorities have decided to restrict access to the temple on weekends in order to reduce the destructive consequences of such popularity. According to caretakers, visitors are breaking the rules: instead of using ladders, they climb the ancient structure directly along the walls of the temple, causing them to collapse. Stones are falling out of the masonry - dangerous areas have already been fenced off, and signs have been installed along the entire perimeter of the temple warning tourists of the need to follow the rules when visiting a monument protected by UNESCO.
