Japan has introduced an exit tax: starting January 7, tourists leaving the country will have to pay 1,000 yen (about $9).
As it became known, the tax will be included in the price of tickets for planes or cruise ships along with other fees. Thus, it will not require any additional actions from travelers, such as paying at a special cash desk at customs. The exception will be passengers on private jets, who will have to pay before departure. The tax does not apply to children under two years of age, transit passengers leaving Japan within 24 hours, people subject to deportation, and those who find themselves in the country due to extraordinary circumstances, such as an emergency landing, TASS writes.
The funds coming into the treasury are expected to be used to develop infrastructure ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. According to preliminary estimates, the departure tax will bring in about 50 billion yen (about $460 million) annually.
