The Russian Foreign Ministry warned of increased protest activity in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, on May 8 in connection with the re-election of the country's prime minister, Interfax reports.

"In Armenia, on May 8, an increase in protest activity in the city of Yerevan cannot be ruled out. The protests may take place in the area of the National Assembly and Parliament buildings. Disruptions to public transportation are also expected. Tourists are advised to avoid crowded areas," reports The Russian Foreign Ministry's crisis center tweeted Monday.
Mass demonstrations calling for the government's resignation have been ongoing in Armenia since April 13. Under pressure, Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan resigned after just one week in office. After parliament failed to elect Nikol Pashinyan, the leader of the opposition faction and the Yelk Party, as the new prime minister last week, he called for a general strike. On Wednesday, opposition supporters blocked major roads, and new rallies took place in Yerevan and other cities. A new prime ministerial election is scheduled for May 8, and Pashinyan will be the only candidate up for election.
