P O According to the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, Canada, the United States, Russia and Sweden showed the greatest increase in the number of tourists arriving by air to Puerto Plata in 2017, the Dominican Ministry of Tourism reports.
IN Overall, 41,740 more tourists visited Puerto Plata in 2017 than in 2016. In total, Gregorio Lupero International Airport received 449,082 people, compared to 407,342 in 2016, representing an increase of 10.2%.
This left Puerto Plata as the only destination with double-digit growth in the country, driven in part by the rise of the Canadian market, which sent 20% more tourists than in 2016 (170,472 tourists compared to 141,995). The figure for the tourist flow from the United States changed by 5.7% to 124,003 tourists.
Russia deserves a special mention, having demonstrated a recovery in the flow – in 2017, 6,651 more Russians came to Puerto Plata than the year before. In percentage terms, the growth was 54.1% – from 5,521 visitors in 2016 to 12,172 in 2017. The Swedish market grew by 21% – to 12,719 arrivals.
Traditional markets such as Germany remained virtually static at 60,099 tourists, with Poland, Finland and Italy showing similar figures for both years.
Hotel renovations in Playa Dorada and other areas of Puerto Plata have marked a positive momentum in the region in 2017. The 193-room VH Atmosphere Hotel, Emotions By Hodelpa Playa Dorada, the ongoing renovation of the Aldiana Club and the upcoming renovation of Senators Hotels are part of the investments currently boosting the sector.
