Rospotrebnadzor warns of fever in Peru

Rospotrebnadzor informs about the epidemiological situation in Peru associated with the spread of infectious diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, Zika and chikungunya fever, as well as yellow fever.

"High risk of transmission of dengue fever and malaria is present throughout the country all year round. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 73,921 cases of dengue fever were registered in 2017, with severe forms predominating, of which 17 cases were fatal. In terms of the number of malaria cases, Peru ranks second in South America (after Brazil). From 2000 to 2015, 206,082 cases of the disease were registered in the country, of which 22 cases were in the capital, Lima,” the department notes.

In Peru, cases of chikungunya fever are registered annually; in 2017, 1,733 suspected cases of chikungunya fever were registered, 717 cases were laboratory confirmed.

Yellow fever cases have been registered annually in Peru since the 2000s. Endemic areas are provinces located at altitudes of up to 2,300 m in all regions of the Amazon basin. In 2016, 78 cases of yellow fever were registered in the country, and in 2017, 1 fatal case of the disease was registered.

When visiting Peru, mandatory vaccination against yellow fever is required, which is the only measure to prevent the disease (it is necessary to receive a single vaccination, which is carried out no later than 10 days before departure, immunity after vaccination lasts for life).

Local transmission of the Zika virus has been reported in the country. Since the disease was first reported in 2015, Peru has registered more than 7,000 suspected cases of Zika fever.

Rospotrebnadzor asks to take this information into account when planning trips.
