Three Russian cities have become leaders in the event potential of Russian regions

According to the results of a study by the National Convention Bureau, Kazan, St. Petersburg, and Yekaterinburg were among the top three cities in the 2019 Regional Event Potential Rating.

At the end of 2019, the Exhibition Research Center R&C once again summarized the results of a study of the Russian event market. The study was based on five groups of indicators that have the most significant impact on the development of regional business and event tourism markets: the availability of specialized infrastructure and material and technical resources for the event industry, the presence of an approved policy for developing the region's congress and exhibition potential, the presence of a program for promoting the region in domestic and international markets, the region's experience in attracting and hosting significant, high-profile events, and the destination's tourist appeal and transport accessibility.

"Russia is a promising country in terms of developing congress activities and is capable of posing serious competition to other countries in this area. It's clear that in such a vast country, not all regions are in an equal position to attract and host major international events," he emphasized. Director of the National convention bureau Alexey Kalachev.

He also noted that destinations with the necessary infrastructure and experience in hosting large events, which have so-called event legacy, are in the best position to attract international congresses.

The study showed that across a range of criteria, such as the number of events attracted, the development of tourism infrastructure, and the level of transport accessibility, the quantitative indicators of most regions in 2019 improved compared to 2018, and the composition of indicators became more diverse.

Compared to the previous year, the top three rankings have partially changed. St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg traditionally occupy first and second places, respectively. Kazan moved up one place, hosting the 45th WorldSkills Competition in 2019 at the new Kazan Expo venue, which opened in the fall of 2018.

The active work of the Convention Bureau of the Republic of Tatarstan has enabled Kazan to become the third city, behind Moscow and St. Petersburg, in terms of the number of international rotating association events hosted in the medium term. Traditionally, Moscow (and the Moscow region) are not included in the ranking due to the high level of development of its event infrastructure and performance in this area.

Samara, Rostov-on-Don, and Krasnoyarsk entered the top 10 rankings, showing significant improvements compared to the previous period. According to experts, Krasnoyarsk's breakthrough is largely due to efforts to develop the region's infrastructure and promote it in the global event tourism market in connection with hosting the 29th Winter Universiade 2019.
