A new air traffic model will be launched in the Moscow zone in 2019

Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Alexander Yurchik announced that a new air traffic model in the Moscow zone will be operational as early as 2019. Two models of this traffic were initially developed, one of which was developed by a research institute subordinate to the Ministry of Transport. Institute of Civil Aviation (GosNII GA), which will be launched, and the second one – the American Jeppesen (commissioned by Aeroflot and Vnukovo).

"This is the organization of aircraft flights in the area of the very busy Moscow air hub, the aircraft movement model during approaches, corridor approaches, and exits to airfields," noted Alexander Yurchik on the sidelines of the conference "Air border crossings across the Russian Federation: problems, analysis, and solutions."

He believes that this model will increase capacity and flight safety, as it will significantly reduce the number of conflicting intersections and points where airliners were traveling in opposite directions, Interfax reports.

"The Moscow airspace's capacity was approaching just under 100 million passengers per year. Now, the Moscow airspace will be able to handle up to 150 million passengers per year with the same number of runways and airport operators. We've solved this problem for the next 5-10 years," he said.

Incidentally, the current air traffic model over the Moscow zone has been in use since 1970. Back then, it was designed for a single air carrier, which leads to additional costs.

As mentioned earlier, the new model was developed by the Civil Aviation Research Institute (GosNII GA). It underwent numerous revisions, but ultimately, a design was developed that meets all requirements. "Its configuration underwent extensive modifications and numerous improvements. There were more than seven different options under consideration. We also engaged Jeppesen for consultations. Finally, a model was finalized, which will be implemented in the Moscow airspace at the new Mission Control Center starting next year," stated Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Alexander Yurchik.
