Peter the Great's Summer Palace opens to the public in St. Petersburg

The grand opening of Peter the Great's restored Summer Palace took place in St. Petersburg. This branch of the Russian Museum will open to visitors tomorrow, May 26.

The Summer Palace is located on the territory of the Summer Garden in the very center of the city. The restoration lasted four years, during which time the first floor was waterproofed, the stone floors were restored, and the ceilings and rafters were reinforced. Restorers returned the palace to its original interiors and restored the wall and ceiling paintings from Peter the Great's time. The palace's facades were also given a new color—white, as they were during the reign of Peter the Great and remained until the mid-20th century.

According to TASS, tours of the Summer Palace will be held at intervals of approximately half an hour and in small groups of 15 people.

Peter I's Summer Palace was built in 1711-1712 according to designs by Domenico Trezzini. The Emperor lived there every summer, occupying the first floor, while Catherine I's chambers were located on the second floor.
