100,000 relics to be displayed at Grand Egyptian Museum

At the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza (GEM), which will open by mid-2018, will feature more than 100,000 relics, including 4,500 items from Tutankhamun's treasures discovered in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, Ahram Online reports.

Let us recall that the Great The Egyptian Museum was supposed to open in 2015, but its construction was delayed due to financial issues. By the way, according to the project, the construction of the museum costs more than 1 billion US dollars.

The museum, located at the foot of the Giza pyramids, is still under construction. However, when it finally opens, its exhibits will include the collections of the current Egyptian Museum in Cairo's Tahrir Square, including many objects stored in storage.

It should be noted that the old museum lacks exhibition space. In addition, on January 28, 2011, during the civil unrest, the museum in Tahrir Square was attacked by criminals who stole several exhibits.

The Grand Egyptian Museum will feature exhibits from the earliest times to the Greco-Roman era in the country's history.

According to the authors of the project, the total area of the museum complex will be 480 thousand square meters.

In addition to the main museum building, the complex includes a cinema, library, classrooms, conference halls, a multimedia center, a children's museum, a museum for people with disabilities, an entertainment center, exhibition halls for temporary exhibits and parks.

For the convenience of tourists, the museum complex will be connected to the Giza pyramids by a special road.

Egyptian authorities expect that the Grand Egyptian Museum will receive 8 million visitors annually within five years of its opening.
