Just think, I was about to cancel this trip, which had almost doubled in price due to the fall of the ruble. How wonderful that the call of the heart won in the battle with common sense, and I, despite everything, went to Norway. Of course, if I had not been so lucky there, I would now regretfully remember these euros, which could have been used to buy plane tickets for all the planned expeditions this year, and would have had a decent amount left over.
But at the beginning, everything was going as bad as it could have. Because of a storm, we had to change the route, and 6 days of the expedition turned into 3 days. On the first day, we sailed to an amazing place - killer whales and whales were everywhere! Unfortunately, the short six-hour daylight was already drawing to an end, and it was too late to launch a motorboat into the water. So we concentrated on filming from the stern of our vessel.
In the evening we moored in the port of the town of Andenes, one of the islands in the Vesterålen district, and I went for a walk around the town in search of good spots to photograph the northern lights. Fortunately, the weather was clear, and there were many chances to see this miracle. Almost immediately the sky lit up with colors and I took several shots from the shore.
And then I noticed a lighthouse in the distance and, of course, hurried to it. What was happening around was fabulously beautiful and, sometimes, I just sat down and admired this incredible show that nature had put on that evening.
Raising my head vertically upward, I saw the Little Dipper, illuminated by an iridescent green glow.
It all seemed like a dream. After all, many of my friends had been unsuccessfully catching the northern lights for weeks, and in the middle of the season. And the locals had told me before the trip that the end of January was not the best time for this.
It was almost 2am and time to get back to the boat. We needed to get some sleep before tomorrow, which promised incredible adventures at sea. Everyone was looking forward to the remaining two days. After that, we had two more days to return to the port of the town of Rørvik.
