Experts from British insurance company Alpha Travel Insurance calculated which cities around the world have the most bars. Lonely Planet reports on the study's findings.
London is officially recognized as the undisputed leader in the number of places where you can relax with a glass of beer or wine. The UK capital is home to 1,327 bars, ranging from classic pubs to exclusive wine bars.
Tokyo came in second with 955 beer establishments. The neon city also offers a diverse selection of places to drink. The Golden Gai district is particularly popular with tourists, home to hundreds of tiny bars that only fit a few people. New York City rounded out the top three with its legendary 875 bars.
The study found that seven of the top ten cities with the most bars are in Europe. These include Madrid (865 bars), Barcelona (733), Prague (601), Berlin (596), Rome (523), and Istanbul (421). Another US city, Chicago, also made the top ten. It boasts 517 bars, ranging from sports venues and brewery establishments to jazz clubs and traditional Irish pubs.
Moscow ranked 15th. Experts counted 284 bars in the Russian capital. St. Petersburg had 159. This figure allowed the city on the Neva to rank only 38th. The only Scandinavian city to make the top 50 was Copenhagen, where you can enjoy a beer or something stronger at 140 bars (ranking 42nd).
