Türkiye, Thailand, Vietnam, and Spain were named the most dangerous countries for tourists in 2017. These are the countries where travelers most frequently filed insurance claims, according to data from ERV.
A company specializing in travel insurance ERV has named the top 10 countries for tourist insurance claims. Turkey recorded the highest number of insurance claims in 2017—28,510—representing 441,333 of the total number of claims. Thailand ranked second, with 8,194 claims filed. ERV also ranked Vietnam, Spain, the Dominican Republic, Bulgaria, and Greece among the top 10 most dangerous countries for tourists. Cyprus, India, and Tunisia rounded out the list.
According to insurance company representatives, the most complex case was the hospitalization of a 76-year-old tourist with pneumonia in Switzerland. Her €50,000 insurance policy covered all necessary expenses. Furthermore, costly insurance claims occurred last year in the United States, Austria, Switzerland, Singapore, and Thailand. In these countries, the highest claims costs were nearly 3,000,000 rubles each. ERV also noted that in 2017, the number of tourist claims for insurance claims increased by 1,611,000,000 compared to the previous year.
It's worth noting that visiting Turkey and many other countries without travel insurance is definitely not recommended. Insurance coverage starts at 400 rubles, depending on the coverage amount. If an insured event occurs, tourists should call their insurance company at the number listed on their policy. This will confirm whether the claim is covered and provide all necessary instructions on how to proceed.
