Channel Island Needs New Caretaker

A new caretaker is being sought for a tiny island in the UK, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. The caretaker will have access to a renovated house, a natural pool, and a tractor, according to the BBC.

A vacancy for a caretaker of Lihu Island in the English Channel was opened after After the current caretaker, Richard Curtis, announced his move to France after 14 years on the job. His duties include maintaining the only house and caring for the wildlife in the reserve. He is also required to lead tourist excursions.

In addition to a restored 1960s house with all the amenities, Lihu Island boasts a garage with a tractor, several outbuildings, a natural pool on the shoreline, a clean water well, and a solar panel system. According to R. Curtis, the new caretaker is expected to offer fresh ideas for the island's development.

Lihou has a rich history. Its first known settlers were monks from Mont Saint-Michel in France. They built a monastery in the 12th century, the remains of which can still be found on the island. Furthermore, Lihou was occupied by German soldiers during World War II. Over the past few decades, more than 100 pieces of ammunition have been found underground. In the 1980s, the buildings located here were abandoned. However, in 2005, farming on the island was restored. Lihou can be reached by boat or via a paved road connecting it to the island of Guernsey, which opens at low tide.

A similar vacancy had previously appeared in Greece. An Aegean island urgently needed someone to care for the 55 cats living there. The new employee was offered a modest salary and accommodation in a house with a private garden.
