India to Increase Tourist Market Share to 2%

The Indian government aims to increase the country's share of the global tourist market to 1% by 2020 and to 2% by 2025, the country's tourism ministry said.

According to the results of 2016, the country's share in the total world tourist flow (arrival of foreign tourists to India) amounted to 0.71%, while India's outbound share in the total flow was 1.18%.

The government expects to increase these figures, including India's share of tourist arrivals, to 1% and 2% by 2020 and 2025, respectively.

To this end, the country's Ministry of Tourism has developed two concepts. The country will focus on the integrated development of themed tourist routes and the promotion of pilgrimages and trips to religious shrines. The second concept aims to create tourism infrastructure and foster a tourism culture in the country.

At this stage, the Ministry has launched a campaign to inform industry stakeholders and the public about the state's plans in the tourism sector.
