Taj Mahal Tickets for Foreigners Increase in Price

The Archaeological Survey of India's Ministry of Culture has increased the entrance fee to the famous Taj Mahal mausoleum for foreign citizens. Now, to enjoy the view from the inside of the "Pearl of India" located in Agra, tourists will have to pay 1,100 rupees (about $16).

According to RIA Novosti, only citizens of countries that are members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, of which India is a member, will receive a 50% discount.

As a reminder, this spring, visiting hours at the Taj Mahal were limited to ensure the monument's continued preservation. Admission tickets are valid for only three hours starting April 1st—enough time to explore the mausoleum and surrounding grounds.

Built by Shah Jahan in 1631, the mausoleum became the final resting place of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The ruler himself was later buried there. The tombs of Jahan and his wife, adorned with semiprecious stones, are visited by millions of tourists each year. In 1983, the Taj Mahal was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
