The travel service Tutu.ru analyzed all airline tickets issued for departures to more than 130 countries for the year from September 1, 2018, to September 1, 2019.
As the company's press service told TRN, the most expensive air tickets are in August and January. August is still and the most popular month among travelers (based on the share of flights). In January, those flying most often choose vacation time and destinations where they can enjoy the warmth, which often means long-distance international flights. This explains the higher airfare prices. The cheapest months to fly are the shoulder seasons: February, March, October, and November.
By purchasing airline tickets departing in the off-season, rather than during the peak summer season, you can save up to 30% on the cost of an air ticket.
The cheapest month for air travel was March, with a roundtrip ticket averaging 23,813 rubles. February came in second (24,254 rubles), and November third (24,528 rubles). The most expensive tickets were sold in the summer months (July and August) and January.
Passenger traffic was compared for each of the 12 months. Passengers travel most frequently in July and August, while February and March are the least frequent.
In Russia, passengers also most often choose July and August for travel, and fly the least in February.
Every country has its own high and low season. For example, most tourists travel to Bulgaria, Greece, Spain, and Montenegro in August. Travelers like to visit Germany and the Czech Republic in December. Overall, the least popular months for travel in Europe are January, February, and November.
Summer isn't always the most expensive time to travel in Europe. For example, the most expensive months to fly to the Czech Republic are December and January (but you could save money by flying there in February). For a budget-friendly trip to Germany, February is a better choice. September and November are good months to visit Bulgaria, but those on a budget shouldn't go there in January.
As for the 10 countries listed, the cheapest months for travel are November and February, and the most expensive is August.
January is a popular month for tourists flying to India and Thailand. February is popular for those flying to the Maldives. Turkey experiences a surge of tourists in June, July, and August, while Israel sees a surge in October. October is popular for those flying to India and the UAE. Tourists tend to visit Vietnam from October to January, and Cuba in November.
As for distant countries, June and November are the best months to fly to them. However, when purchasing tickets, consider the season. For example, November or May are good times to fly to Vietnam. And traveling to the US in August will help you save on tickets.
The bulk of passenger traffic occurs during the summer months, but not in all countries. For example, November is the peak month for flights to Uzbekistan. July saw a sharp decline in passenger traffic to Georgia due to the cancellation of direct flights between the countries.
Cheap trips to neighboring countries can be planned in February and March. Conversely, the most expensive flights are in July and August. However, there are countries where flights in December are just as expensive as in the summer months. For example, flying to Tajikistan in December is more expensive than in June.
