O'Callaghan Hotels Group intends to launch an investment program of 100 million euros across all its property, including considerable funds that will be spent on the reconstruction, modernization and construction of hotels in Gibraltar.
O'Callaghan Hotels Group said it would upgrade its hotels on the peninsula, including the Eliott Hotel, which opened in 1996. Once completed, the four-star hotel will be one of the resort's finest, the chain said.
Gibraltar, known for its legal gambling zone, duty-free shopping zone and simplified tax regime, is looking to expand its hotel offer.
Thus, one of the most popular hotel brands in the world, Holiday Inn Express, is scheduled to open on the peninsula in the second quarter of 2018 under a franchise agreement with G. & JB Hotels 2014.
"In addition to its image as a tourist destination, Gibraltar also has a reputation as a financial centre. Combined with its excellent location, the new Holiday Inn Express is well placed to attract business and leisure travellers," said Franco Ostuni, CEO of G. & JB Hotels 2014.
By the way, last year, the luxurious five-star hotel-yacht Sunborn of The Rock chain opened on the peninsula in the heart of the Ocean Village harbor. The hotel offers 189 rooms, a casino, a restaurant, a pool bar, a spa center and a fitness center.
It is worth noting that Gibraltar’s position as a British territory is being closely monitored in the current Brexit negotiations. In early November, Brexit Secretary David Davis told the House of Lords that the government must remain wary of any Spanish attempts to make claims on Gibraltar once the UK “leaves the bloc”.
"We are clear that in future EU legislation or wider policy cannot weaken or undermine the international law basis for British sovereignty over Gibraltar," said the speaker.
