Malaysia to impose exit tax

From June 1, Malaysia will begin to collect a tourist tax on departures from the country. The new fee will be paid by tourists leaving Malaysia on scheduled flights and cruise ships; charter passengers will not be affected by the tax.

According to Interfax, the tax per person will be 20 Malaysian ringgits (about $5) when traveling to ASEAN countries (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Brunei, Laos) and 40 ringgits ($9.5) for other destinations.

The authorities plan to use the funds collected in this way for the development of the country.
