According to media reports, India is experiencing one of the most devastating floods in the last 100 years. As a result of heavy rainfall that began in mid-August and lasted for about two weeks, many regions were flooded, and thousands of buildings and structures were submerged.
The state of Kerala suffered the most from the floods, where the monsoons claimed at least 400 lives. Hundreds are missing, and millions have been evacuated from the disaster zone. Another 600 or so people died in other states—West Bengal, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam. The floods triggered landslides, destroying hundreds of buildings and structures, and infrastructure, including transportation. Cities and villages across the state are experiencing power outages and drinking water shortages.
The international airport in Cochin is closed. Its reopening is scheduled for Wednesday, August 29. However, experts note that the airport was severely damaged by flooding. It was built on rice fields, near one of the state's 12 rivers.
The Indian Metrological Service is currently reporting a drop in water levels. Authorities have yet to assess the economic damage caused by the disaster.
