Another, even dirtier spot on the plane has been found

According to a recent study, the headrest and seat pocket are the dirtiest places on a plane, according to the Daily Star.

Marketplace initiated an audit of two dozen flights on the Ottawa-Montreal route to find out in which parts of the plane Passengers are exposed to the highest concentration of germs and bacteria. The dirtiest area on board planes turned out to be the seat headrests. Microbiologists reported that this area contained high levels of bacteria, yeast, and mold, which can cause serious infections. The scientists were particularly surprised to find a type of bacteria found on the headrests that is common in the intestines of humans and animals.

Seat pockets were no less dirty. This area also poses a risk of serious food poisoning and infection. Biologists have identified stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea, which can last up to seven days, as classic symptoms of such illnesses. Interestingly, crew members confirm the scientists' findings. Flight attendants on Ottawa-Montreal flights reported that used diapers, food wrappers, and even tampons are often found in the pockets.

Marketplace said the headrests and seat pockets were dirtier than items on board such as the seat belt, tray table, and toilet paper holder in the restroom.

In February, a similar study was conducted on several American airlines and at three major US airports. The lavatory flush button was found to be the dirtiest spot on the plane, where microbiologists found over 95,000 germs. By comparison, a typical kitchen countertop contains 361 germs, and the toilet handle in an average apartment contains about 30. The passenger seat tray table and seat belt buckle are next on the list of dirtiest areas. The self-service check-in screens, lounge armrests, and water fountain buttons were also found to be the dirtiest spots in airports.
