State Department: Terrorist attacks may occur in Barcelona

The US State Department warned tourists about the possibility of terrorist attacks in Barcelona, Spain. The corresponding message was published on the department's official Twitter page.

During the Christmas and New Year holidays in the Las Ramblas area of Barcelona "Extra caution should be exercised in areas where vehicles are moving, including on buses. Terrorists can attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist sites, transportation hubs, and other public spaces," the State Department stated.

As a reminder, on August 17, 2017, a terrorist attack occurred in the capital of Catalonia: a car driven by 22-year-old Younes Abouyaakouba drove onto the pedestrian area of La Rambla. Thirteen people died from their injuries, and approximately 100 more were injured to varying degrees. However, Abouyaakouba managed to flee the scene of the crime, later fatally stabbing the driver of a nearby car, and then stealing it. A few days later, on August 21, Younes Abouyaakouba was shot and killed by Spanish police during a special operation in the city of Subirats. The Islamic State group, banned in Russia, claimed responsibility for the attack.
