Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi announced the launch of an electronic visa system on the first day of the Cairo ICT-2017 international information technology exhibition in Cairo, RIA Novosti reports.
“Today we are launching the electronic visa project as the first "This is a stage of a large-scale national strategy... to facilitate travel to Egypt, develop tourism and attract more foreign tourists," the Egyptian leader said.
Egypt planned to introduce an electronic visa system as early as June 1, 2017, but postponed this step indefinitely due to technical reasons.
The e-visa system is expected to allow any tourist anywhere in the world to apply for an electronic visa to enter the country. According to media reports, e-visas can be obtained and paid for in advance through an online system, which expedites the entry process and passport control at airports.
Experts expect the e-visa system to significantly increase tourist flow, particularly from countries whose citizens must obtain a visa to Egypt in advance, such as China, which is a significant source of hope for the Egyptian tourism sector.
