The runway at Donegal Airport in Ireland has been recognized as the most picturesque in the world. Experts note that the airport is surrounded by stunning rocky shores lapped by the emerald waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Landing here, they add, feels like landing on another planet. Furthermore, the local landscape is renowned for being used as the setting for one of the final installments of the Star Wars film saga.
Barra Airport, on the coast of Scotland's Outer Hebrides, ranked second. A unique feature of this airport is its sandy runways. The airport is only operational during daylight hours and low tide. Barra only handles small private aircraft.
Rounding out the top three is Nice Airport in France. Situated on the Mediterranean coast near the mouth of the Var River, the airport is the third busiest in the country. Also in the top 10 most picturesque airports are Queenstown Airport in New Zealand and Juancho Irausquín Airport on the island of Saba in the Caribbean, whose runway is the shortest in the world at 40 meters. Next in the ranking are Orlando Melbourne Airport in the United States, Toronto Billy Bishop Airport in Canada, London Airport, St. Maarten Airport in the Caribbean, and Miami International Airport.
